Touring and Day Trips in your Car
Glencoe Mountain Cottages provide a wonderful base for touring the sea
lochs and glens of the Western Highlands. During the past year our
guests have travelled far and wide on day trips. Listed below is a
small sample of some of the most popular days out.
Isle of Mull – Crossing by ferry then onto the islands of Iona and Staffa.
Isle of Skye – Driving along ‘The Road to The Isles’ to Mallaig and then by ferry to Skye.
Oban
– Watching the ferries sail to and from the islands and seeing the
fishing boats landing their catch. Many enjoyed a guided tour of the
distillery!
Fort William – Visiting the Ben
Nevis Visitor Centre and going on wildlife cruises on Loch Linnhe. Many
guests enjoyed a ride on the Mountain Gondola at Nevis Range to enjoy
the stunning views, and also stopping for refreshments at the Snowgoose
Restaurant.
Jacobite Steam Railway – Very popular day trip on the ‘Harry Potter Hogwarts’ train to Mallaig and back.
Corran Ferry to Ardnamurchan
- Wonderful drive around the peninsular with lots of stops for walks to
stunning sandy beaches followed by a trip to one of the many tea shops!
Loch Ness and the Great Glen – keep you binoculars at the ready!
Land Rover Safaris in Glencoe
– Go with a ranger from The Glencoe National Trust for Scotland Visitor
Centre to learn about the history, wildlife and geology of the glen.
Outdoor activities
Lochaber is known as the Outdoor Capital of the UK and there is a
wealth of outdoor activities you can participate in within a short
distance from the cottages. Just a few of these include:
Walking
- Walking is extremely popular in the Glencoe area. There is a wealth
of opportunities for all levels of walkers. Please click on the tab to
the left for more information.
Mountain Biking
– The World Mountain Biking Championships are held at Nevis Range,
where there are downhill and cross-country routes, but there is a host
of other mountain biking opportunities in the area.
The Ice Factor – This is a unique centre with its ice wall, climbing wall and high level ropes course.
Water Sports – Just three miles away there are sailing and canoeing schools and you can also hire canoes and sea kayaks.
Adventure Schools and Horse Riding – There are a number of adventure schools locally providing half or full day activities.
Skiing
– Both Nevis Range and Glencoe ski areas are easily accessible and 2008
has proved to be a very successful season with many days of wonderful
skiing.
